Christmas Concert, 2009 - Bowen Island Community Choir

This year’s Community Choir Concert concert on December 12th at Cates Hill Chapel was an emotional event drawing from various cultures centering around the Spirit of Christmas. Choral director, Ellen Macintosh had the choir primed delivering an intense and dramatic program that was punctuated with some extraordinary readings and solos.

Opening the show was a dramatic reading of islander Jude Neale’s poem, Squamish Storm. When Icicles Hang quickly followed, a Shakespearean poem set to quirky, harmonic tunings. As the lights came up following the eerie, chilling tune featuring lyrics such as hiss in the bowl Bowen’s finest wandering Minstrel, Bob Doucet, pranced up the isle singing Christmas in Hawaii.

There were many exceptional performances including guest flute soloist Keona Hammond; islander and jazz vocalist Yvonne McSkimming and young dancers from The Bowen Island Dance Academy.

There were many special moments in the concert, but Yvonne McSkimming’s rendition of Amy Grant's I Need A Silent Night deserves a special mention. Her connection to the song and purity of tone along with Brian Hoover’s playful bass accompaniment and the choir's triumphant harmonic refrain had many audience members entranced.

Other highlights were the poignant poetry of Bob Chilcott in “Put Memory Away” as read by Jude Neale along with guest percussionist Brian Hoover’s steadfast beat, the unswerving accompanist Sheilagh Sparks and the Choir’s unfailing ability to charm and please it’s audience with it’s wonderous sonority.
