Snug Cove Village Design & Transportation Concepts Document

E-mail Print PDF

Linked here [Adobe Acrobat PDF - 73.43 MB] is the full 2011 rendition of the Snug Cove Village Plan (Redevelopment) and Ferry Marshalling concept document. This is the complete document and not the abridged version or the simplified companion website

This document is the most complete and telling piece of communication that has come out this exercise and is well worth pouring over if you want to get a true sense of what is proposed. There is much to digest. This reader has gone over it a number of times and although many of the ideas are similar to what has been proposed in past years (named "The Loop Road" option, the "Double Lane Loading" option and so on, the ideas are further evolved in terms of thinking through the human use of this space and the idea of presenting a unified sense of architecture throughout the Cove and make it become a "designed space".

The Municipality staged a Public Turf Field Meeting, moderated by CAO Slegtenhorst, a week before the expected completion of the work on the field. It was to allow the Project Team to update to the Community on the progress, the launch date and to answer questions the public would have.

Christine Walker, BIM Community Services Manager, provided an overview of the project to date. Project Manager, Florrie Levine and Stacy Beamer elaborated on technical details including additional drainage that was created for the existing grass field. A question and answer session followed the presentation with most of the questions being fielded by Managing Director of GeoTurf, Domenic Carapella. Many of the questions about health issues and the organic infill were explained in detail. The discussion also went into the practical benefits of the field which resulted in a positive exchange between key members of the Bowen Island Football Club and people that were in varying degrees of opposition to the project.

Council chambers was packed to overflowing for the 3 hour meeting. People outside were encouraged several times to sign up if they wished to make presentation to the Approving Officer, Mr. Slegtenhorst. The comments were wide ranging but inline with the public commentary to date. It was the first meeting the politically active public got to see Mr. Slegtenhorst in action dealing with the public and how he handles issues. If you missed the meeting and the fate of the Cape is of interest, you should watch this.
